  4.     The tension fairly crackled in the Stockholm courtroom as
  5. Lisbet Palme, the widow of assassinated Prime Minister Olof
  6. Palme, was asked whether the man she had seen just after the
  7. shooting of her husband more than three years ago was present.
  8. "Yes," she answered, indicating Christer Pettersson, 42, a
  9. confessed drug addict who is charged with murdering Palme. "Are
  10. you sure?" asked the prosecutor. After looking briefly at
  11. Pettersson, Mrs. Palme answered with a second yes.

  13.     Her testimony last week gave a much needed boost to the
  14. prosecution. Since the trial got under way three weeks ago, four
  15. key witnesses have recanted their pretrial testimony. Two of
  16. them admitted they had initially been swayed by hopes of sharing
  17. in the $7.5 million reward offered by the government. The court
  18. has been sharply criticized for agreeing to preconditions set
  19. by Lisbet Palme for her testimony, including a ban on tape
  20. recorders and television cameras. The prosecutors, whose case
  21. against Pettersson is built on circumstantial evidence, have yet
  22. to come up with a murder weapon or a motive.
